How much does it really cost to use Toggl Track?

Toggl Track, one of the three products offered by Toggl for efficient team management, is a time tracking software that facilitates tracking, reporting, and calculation of time spent on various tasks. It caters to the needs of freelancers, entrepreneurs, and businesses looking to monitor their teams and projects, with a software and mobile app duo that provides flexibility for users on the go.

Toggl Track offers rich features like editable time blocks and a constant tracking reminder through the Toggl button. The software stands out among other time tracking software and has garnered high ratings on review platforms, indicating its popularity among users.

Pricing models

Toggl Track offers four pricing tiers: Free, Starter, Premium, and Enterprise, with each tier offering different features and capabilities. Paid plans start at $9 per user per month and increase with each tier, as detailed below:

Free: This plan is free for up to five users and provides basic time tracking and reporting features.

Starter: Geared towards small teams and priced at $9/user/month. Includes billable rates, saved reports, and basic project management features.

Premium: Targeted towards larger teams and priced at a hefty $18/user/month. Offers additional features such as reminders, audits, and advanced project management capabilities.

Enterprise: This plan’s pricing varies depending on team size and specific requirements. Provides a tailored experience for multiple teams and priority support.

What are the 5 things you gotta watch out for with Toggl Track’s paid plans?

1. Hidden fees

There are no hidden fees associated with Toggl Track, as the pricing and available features are clearly outlined on their website. The only fees that users encounter are the monthly subscription fees for the paid plans. However, it is important to note that the number of users and the level of plan chosen affects the monthly cost.

2. Limited features on lower pricing tiers

I’d say Toggl Track does a pretty decent job of offering the majority of its features in its free plan. So it’s not just a free plan with some basic functionalities, but actually a suite of important features required by businesses.

The free plan includes:

  • unlimited time tracking, projects, clients, and tags
  • export time-tracking data in a report format for billing and analysis
  • access to Toggl Track’s web app, mobile apps and desktop apps
  • automated time tracking triggers and idle time detection
  • Pomodoro timer
  • CSV imports
  • personal desktop activity tracking
  • compatibility with over 100 popular tools

*It’s important to note that the free plan is only available for up to 5 users!

So safe to say, the free plan is impressive, but only caters to small businesses. For businesses with more than 5 users, Toggl Track offers advanced plans. The Starter, Premium, and Enterprise plans offer additional features like billable rates, project time estimates and alerts, time tracking audits, and native integrations with popular project management tools like Jira and Salesforce. Additionally, the Premium plan offers centralized control of labor costs and billable rates for team members, a valuable tool for businesses managing large teams.

By upgrading to a higher-tier plan, companies can access these advanced features and streamline their time-tracking and project management processes.

3. Contracts and commitments

Toggl Track does not require contracts or long-term commitments, which is a positive feature for many users.

What I appreciate the most is again, is its free plan, that allows businesses to test out the software before making any commitment. You can easily determine if the software meets your needs and if the commitment is worth it for your business.

4. Inflexibility in pricing

I find Toggl Track’s pricing structure to be quite transparent and clear with set pricing tiers and specific features available at each tier. And so while transparency in pricing is important, it almost always comes at the cost of flexibility. Some companies may find the fixed pricing tiers less flexible and limiting if they’re looking for a wholly custom solution.

5. Difficulty in canceling or changing plans

Toggl Track allows users to cancel or change plans at any time, which is a positive feature for businesses that have changing needs or budgets.

Is Toggl Track worth it?

Toggle Track is an expensive software compared to others with a paid plan starting at $9/user/month. It also has other downsides that are important to note. However, Toggl Track’s free plan has a decent range of features, making it a viable choice for freelancers or small businesses with less than 5 users.

Additionally, for those interested in the paid plans, it’s worth noting that Toggl Track provides a 30-day trial period for every plan, allowing users to explore and utilize all the features without any commitments or credit card requirements. This trial period offers businesses the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate Toggl Track and determine if it aligns with their specific needs before making a financial investment.

Although Toggl Track may have a higher cost compared to other time tracking software options, the trial period enables businesses to make an informed decision and ensures they are getting the best value for their money.

I’d suggest businesses with less than 5 employees should definitely give Toggl Track a go using its absolutely free plan. But for larger businesses, the 30 day no-commitment trial period seems like a solid option before deciding whether the high price point is worth it or not.
