What Is the Standard Work Time in Malaysia?

In Malaysia, employees can work up to eight hours a day, but not more than five consecutive hours without at least a 30-minute break.

The total workday, including breaks, cannot exceed ten hours, and the maximum number of working hours in a week is 45.

 

What Law Governs Work Hours in Malaysia?

The Employment Act of 1955 is the main piece of legislation that regulates work hours in Malaysia. It sets out the maximum number of working hours per week, rules around rest days and public holidays, as well as provisions for overtime pay.

The Act also provides protection for employees regarding shift work, meal breaks, and limits on consecutive working hours to ensure fair treatment and workplace safety.

 

How Much Is the Minimum Hourly Pay in Malaysia?

As of 2025, the minimum monthly wage in Malaysia is RM 1,700.

There are also daily and hourly rates which vary depending on the number of working days per week.

  • 6 working days per week: RM 65.38 per day
  • 5 working days per week: RM 78.46 per day
  • 4 working days per week: RM 98.08 per day

For employees paid by the hour, the minimum wage is RM 8.72 per hour.
