What Law Governs Work Hours in Colombia?
Work hours in Colombia are regulated by the Colombian Substantive Labor Code, which sets the rules for working time, rest periods, and overtime.
The reduction of the standard workweek to 42 hours is established under Law 2101 of 2021.
What Is the Standard Work Time in Colombia?
The standard working week in Colombia is gradually being reduced from 48 hours to 42 hours per week, with full implementation expected in July 2026. As of early 2026, some companies may still operate under a 44-hour weekly schedule, while others have already adopted the 42-hour limit.
Working time generally refers to the period when an employee is actively performing duties for the employer under the terms of their contract. These hours are typically distributed across five or six working days, and employees must receive at least one full rest day per week.
Working hours are usually divided into two main periods:
- Daytime work: 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Night work: 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., which normally includes additional pay.
If employees work beyond the allowed weekly hours, this is treated as overtime, and pay depends on when the extra hours are worked.
There are also stricter limits for younger workers to help protect education, health, and safety, including reduced daily and weekly hour caps and restrictions on night work.
How Much Is the Minimum Hourly Pay in Colombia?
The minimum wage in Colombia is officially set as a monthly salary, not as a fixed hourly rate. For 2026, the statutory monthly minimum wage is COP 1,750,905 as established by Decree 1469 of December 29, 2025.
Based on this monthly amount, the minimum hourly pay is commonly estimated at around COP 7,200-7,300 per hour, depending on the calculation method used by employers and payroll systems.
Additionally, eligible workers may receive a transport allowance of COP 249,095 per month, but this allowance is paid separately and is not typically included when calculating the base hourly wage.
