FAQs
Some frequently asked questions...
A work time calculator helps companies meet Brazil’s strict time tracking and payroll record requirements while reducing manual workload and calculation errors.
Under Brazilian labor rules (Article 74 of the CLT), companies with more than 20 employees must maintain a formal time and attendance system that records employee start times, end times, and breaks. This control can be manual, mechanical, or electronic, but it must be accurate and accessible to employees.
Brazilian labor regulations also require employers to maintain detailed employee records, including salary calculations, total hours worked, and other payroll data required by government regulations.
Traditionally, this information was recorded in the Employee Registration Book, but now it can be managed electronically through systems such as eSocial, the federal platform that centralizes labor, tax, and social security reporting.
Using a work time calculator makes it easier to generate accurate data for these records, support audits, and ensure compliance with national reporting requirements.
Brazil’s standard workday is 8 hours per day, within a 44-hour weekly limit. Employers may extend the day to up to 10 hours, including overtime, as long as they properly compensate for the extra hours.
For minors, apprentices generally may work up to 6 hours per day, or 8 hours if they have completed basic education.

What Law Governs Work Time in Brazil?
Working time in Brazil is mainly governed by the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT).
This legislation sets rules on working time limits, overtime, rest periods, attendance tracking, and payroll obligations.
It applies to most private-sector employees and is supported by collective agreements that may set more favorable conditions.
What Is the Standard Work Time in Brazil?
The standard work time in Brazil is generally 8 hours per day and 44 hours per week.
The workday can be extended up to 10 hours per day if overtime is included and properly compensated.
In practice, companies use different schedule formats to reach the 44-hour weekly limit. Common examples include:
- 8 hours Monday to Friday + 4 hours on Saturday
- About 8 hours and 48 minutes Monday to Friday
- 9 hours Monday to Thursday + 8 hours on Friday
When extra weekday hours are used to reduce or eliminate Saturday work, those extra hours are usually not treated as overtime.
For minors, Brazilian labor laws apply stricter protections:
- Work is generally prohibited for those under age 16
- Apprenticeships are allowed starting at age 14
- Young apprentices can usually work up to 6 hours per day, or up to 8 hours if they have completed basic education
- Night work is prohibited for workers under 18
