Working time in Brazil is mainly governed by the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT).
This legislation sets rules on working time limits, overtime, rest periods, attendance tracking, and payroll obligations.

What Is the Standard Work Time in Brazil?
The standard work time in Brazil is generally 8 hours per day and 44 hours per week.
The workday can be extended up to 10 hours per day if overtime is included and properly compensated.
In practice, companies use different schedule formats to reach the 44-hour weekly limit. Common examples include:
- 8 hours Monday to Friday + 4 hours on Saturday
- About 8 hours and 48 minutes Monday to Friday
- 9 hours Monday to Thursday + 8 hours on Friday
When extra weekday hours are used to reduce or eliminate Saturday work, those extra hours are usually not treated as overtime.
For minors, Brazilian labor laws apply stricter protections:
- Work is generally prohibited for those under age 16
- Apprenticeships are allowed starting at age 14
- Young apprentices can usually work up to 6 hours per day, or up to 8 hours if they have completed basic education
- Night work is prohibited for workers under 18

How Much Is the Minimum Hourly Pay in Brazil?
Brazil sets a national minimum wage by federal decree. As of January 1st, 2026, the minimum wage is R$ 1,621.00 per month, according to Decree No. 12,797.
The decree also establishes an official daily rate of R$ 54.04 and an hourly rate of R$ 7.37.
How Is Overtime Paid in Brazil?
Overtime in Brazil must be paid at a minimum of 1.5x the employee’s regular hourly wage, meaning workers receive at least 50% more for overtime hours. In some cases, collective agreements may require higher overtime rates.
Additional pay rules also apply in certain situations:
- Night work (10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.) includes an extra 20% night shift surcharge
- Overtime worked on weekly rest days or public holidays is typically paid at 2x the normal hourly rate
- Overtime is generally limited to 2 extra hours per day
