Various laws govern work time in India, with the primary framework set out in the Factories Act of 1948 and the Shops and Establishments Acts (which differ by state).
More recently, the new labour code for new India, has introduced uniform rules on working hours, overtime, and rest periods.

What Is the Standard Work Time in India?
Work time in India is strictly regulated to protect employees’ well-being. The rules state that weekly working hours cannot exceed 48 hours. Daily working hours can vary, depending on the nature of work and location.
Some industries also have their own hour rules:
- Factory, Retail, and Hospitality: A maximum of 48 hours per week and 9 hours per day is allowed.
- Mine Workers: No work for more than 10 hours in any day, including overtime hours.
New provisions of the India Labour Code introduces more work hour flexibility, which allow four-day work weeks with longer working hours.
How Much Is the Minimum Pay Rate in India?
The minimum pay rate in India varies per state and employee category.
For New Delhi, the minimum monthly wage is as follows, in Indian Rupees:
- Unskilled: 18,456;
- Semi-skilled: 20,371
- Skilled: 22,411
- Highly skilled: 24,356
For a skilled worker in New Delhi, this would translate to an hourly rate of approximately ₹140, if they work a 40 hour workweek.
