What Is an Overtime Calculator?

An overtime calculator helps you figure out how much extra pay you’ve earned for working beyond your usual hours. Instead of doing the math manually, it quickly works it out based on your pay rate, regular hours, and any overtime you’ve done.

It’s a simple way to get a clear breakdown of your total pay, especially when overtime rates vary depending on the day or situation.

How Can I Use an Overtime Calculator?

Jibble’s overtime calculator makes it quick to work out your extra pay. Here’s how to calculate overtime in South Africa:

  1. Pick how you’re paid — Start by selecting your pay structure: hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly.
  2. Add your standard pay — Enter your usual wage or salary. This is the base amount used to calculate any extra earnings.
  3. Enter your regular working hours — Input the number of hours you normally work within your chosen pay period.
  4. Choose the overtime rate — Pick the multiplier that applies (like 1.5x or 2x), or enter a custom rate based on your company’s policy.
  5. Include your extra hours — Add the number of hours worked beyond your usual schedule.
  6. Get your result — Click calculate to see your total overtime pay, calculated separately from your regular income.

How Much Is Overtime Pay in South Africa?

Overtime in South Africa is usually paid at 1.5x (150%) the normal hourly wage for extra hours worked. Instead of extra pay, the employee and employer may also agree to paid time off, or a combination of overtime pay and time off.

If an employee sometimes works on a Sunday, pay is generally 2x (200%) the normal wage. If Sunday is part of the employee’s regular schedule, it is usually paid at 1.5x the normal wage.

Work on a public holiday must be agreed to. Employees who work on a public holiday are generally entitled to double pay or may agree to take time off instead.

Is There an Overtime Limit in South Africa?

Yes, overtime in South Africa is limited by law.

Employees may work up to 10 hours of overtime per week. In some cases, a collective agreement can temporarily increase this to 15 hours per week, but only for up to two months in a year.

There is also a daily limit. Total working time, including overtime, should generally not exceed 12 hours in a single day.

Is Overtime in South Africa Obligatory?

No, overtime in South Africa is not automatic.

If overtime is needed, the employee must agree to work it. This means employers generally cannot require overtime unless there is consent through an employment contract, collective agreement, or another valid arrangement.

Are South African Businesses Required to Track Overtime?

Yes, South African businesses are required to keep records of employee working hours, including overtime.

Under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, employers must record the time worked and remuneration paid for each employee.  Because overtime forms part of an employee’s total working hours, it must be included in these records.

Overtime details may also need to appear when employees are paid, including the overtime rate and overtime hours worked for that pay period. These records must be kept for three years from the date of the last entry.
